Past Buzzards Bay Swims

Since the first Buzzards Bay Swim in 1993, thousands of swimmers, volunteers, and community members have participated in this annual community event. Check out results, photos, and award winners from past Swims.

2023 Swim

On June 18, 2022, 191 swimmers dove into outer New Bedford Harbor to show their support for a clean and healthy Buzzards Bay by taking part in the 29th annual Buzzards Bay Swim. The event raised over $185,000 to support the Coalition's education, conservation, and advocacy work.

2021 Swim

On June 24, 2021, 47 swimmers dove into outer New Bedford Harbor to show their support for a clean and healthy Buzzards Bay by taking part in the 28th annual Buzzards Bay Swim. The event raised over $125,000 to support the Coalition's education, conservation, and advocacy work.

2019 Swim

On June 22, 2019, 278 swimmers dove into outer New Bedford Harbor to show their support for a clean and healthy Buzzards Bay by taking part in the 26th annual Buzzards Bay Swim. The event raised over $187,000 to support the Coalition's education, conservation, and advocacy work.

2018 Swim

On June 30, 2018, 315 swimmers crossed New Bedford Harbor to show their support for clean water and a healthy Buzzards Bay. The event raised a total of $158,000 to support the Coalition's education, conservation, and advocacy work.

2017 Swim

The 24th annual Buzzards Bay Swim on June 24, 2017 was cancelled due to unsafe weather conditions as the stormy remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy passed over Buzzards Bay. But that didn’t stop 354 dedicated registered swimmers from raising $135,000 for clean water.

264 swimmers showed their support for a clean and healthy Buzzards Bay by taking part in the 19th annual Buzzards Bay Swim on July 7, 2012. The event raised $131,000 to support the Coalition's education, conservation, and advocacy work.

2011 Swim

216 swimmers took the plunge for clean water on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the 18th annual Buzzards Bay Swim. Together, swimmers raised more than $113,000.

The fastest swimmer was Nathan Garner, 15, of Nashua, N.H. with a time of 20:56. The fastest female swimmer was Morgan McCarthy of Orleans, Mass., with a time of 22:17. (View full results from the 2011 Swim.)

The Newport Athletic Club won the Wheeler Watershed Challenge Cup with an average time of 23:32. The Lawrence Regional Vocational Technical High School “Crimson” Team won the Quicks Award with an average time of 21:41.

The top fundraiser was Steve Johnson of Cambridge, Mass., who raised $5,200.

2010 Swim

146 swimmers participated in the 17th annual Buzzards Bay Swim. The fastest swimmer was Matt Shenker of Pocasset with a time of 23:13. The fastest female was Morgan McCarthy of New Castle, Del., with a time of 24:03.

2009 Swim

118 swimmers participated in the 16th annual Buzzards Bay Swim. The fastest swimmer was Matt Shenker of Pocasset with a time of 20:40. The fastest female swimmer was Mara Honohan, 15, with a time of 23:30.

Team SCA won the Wheeler Watershed Challenge Cup. The top fundraiser was Rhea Teves-Cate of Fairhaven.

2008 Swim

104 swimmers participated in the 15th annual Buzzards Bay Swim. The fastest swimmer was Joe Hebert of Amherst, Mass., with a time of 22:39. The fastest female swimmer was Maria Amell, 15, with a time of 24:20.

The team Lakers FLAP won the Wheeler Watershed Challenge Cup. The top fundraiser was Rhea Teves-Cate of Fairhaven.

2007 Swim

93 swimmers participated in the 14th annual Buzzards Bay Swim on Saturday, July 14, 2007. The fastest swimmer was Joe Hebert of Amherst, Mass., with a time of 24:40. The fastest female swimmer was Kendra Medina, 15, of Marion with a time of 26:22.

The team Save the Lakers’ Pool won the Wheeler Watershed Challenge Cup. The top fundraiser was Rhea Teves-Cate of Fairhaven.

2006 Swim

75 swimmers participated in the 13th Buzzards Bay Swim on Saturday, July 15, 2006. The fastest swimmer was Matt Shenker of Pocasset with a time of 21:16. The fastest female swimmer was Noelle Cook with a time of 28:41.

The team Katman Sports won the Wheeler Watershed Challenge Cup with an average time of 33:31. The top fundraiser was Rhea Teves-Cate of Fairhaven, who raised $3,075.

2005 Swim

76 swimmers participated in the 12th annual Buzzards Bay Swim on Saturday, July 23, 2005. The fastest swimmer was Matt Shenker of Pocasset with a time of 23:19. The fastest female swimmer was Stefanie Carter with a time of 33:18.

Team Kavanaugh won the Wheeler Watershed Challenge Cup. The top fundraiser was Lars Olsen, who raised $4,385.
